Philadelphia, PA – Asian Americans For Change Fund - Pennsylvania (AAFCF-PA) launched a new ad today across the commonwealth. In the video, a young Asian woman speaks to Asian American voters. “Republicans want us to be their model minority,” says the speaker, referencing the false myth that positions Asians as closer to values of white body supremacy.

The model minority myth is a violent and false strategy that uses some Asian Americans as a wedge to divide marginalized communities and further white supremacist claims. A tired take on the “pull yourself up by your bootstraps,” the model minority myth propels forward the lie that hard work, strong family values, and perseverance are enough to overcome structural and systemic oppression. The myth champions docility, complacency, and agreeability from marginalized communities as necessary ingredients to achieving success and safety in the United States.

Recognizing the harm and false claims, Asian Americans For Change Fund rejects the model minority myth and other efforts to divide marginalized communities. “We are no one’s model minority,” declares the speaker.

“Asian Americans are the fastest growing electorate in the country,” said AAFCF-PA Programs Manager, Kate Firestone. “We have the power to elect candidates like John Fetterman for Senate and Josh Shapiro for Governor – candidates who have proven time and again that they will fight for our communities. This is dangerous to Republicans who would prefer to strip away our rights while lining their own pockets. Whether they’re attacking a person’s health by criminalizing access to safe abortions and medical care, refusing students’ rights to accurate education, or blaming others for inflation while they and corporations report record profits, Republicans have no limit to their callousness.”
